For the first time ever . I had an important conference call on the way in this morning. So I stayed in the right lane the whole way on my 11 mile commute. It was actually over 30 MPG before I took the pic, but it dropped as I sat idle in the parking spot. I normally get around 22-23 which is still good for spirited driving in a car as quick as the S3. My STi got 12ish MPG when enjoying the drive...I was also 19 then.

Mellow Senna sounds about right for this post.

“ I was also 19 then.”

As my average fuel economy goes up with my age, I must say this is the most important variable.

Mine’s gone down, with the rationale that I can afford to spend more fuel on fun now.

You should have to be 30 before you’re allowed to buy an STi or prove that you’re a lot more mature than I was at that age . My best friend and I bought them used within a few weeks of each other . I had mine for 6 months and got 5 tickets and traded it in . He had his for one month and wrapped it around a tree (tree was all the way to the scoop!) . Mine, sliver on silver. His, black on black.

On my jeep my fuel efficiency increased every year. with experience comes the capacity to read the roads (and it’s occupants) a bit better which means smoother driving. With time you also become a bit more organized, so rather than leaving 10 minutes late, you leave 5 minutes early, that way you don’t have to drive like a maniac to make it to your destination on time.

There was a huge jump when I changed to the Kia, which averaged 21 mpg today; pretty good for mixed driving with a lot of traffic in the city, and some high speed highway driving in a car that was fully laden. (fuel economy is EPA rated at 19/21/25)

“ spend more fuel on fun now.”

But I do enjoy a pull or two once in a while; so that’s going to be a variable as well!

Yikes!

Speed cameras are very uncommon here in Mexico, but I remember that they put a very well hidden one and I got four tickets in a month. It was later removed for being “unconstitutional” or something. You see, lawyers tend to like driving quickly it seems, so they sued the government for entrapment.

Question: how do you you all calculate MPGs? I always do the trip odometer divided by gallons at fill up. For more accurate reading, I’ll keep trip “B” running through three tanks and and add up total gallons of said fillups and do it that way. I don’t know but I don’t care for the calculated MPGs that newer cars give... [end cloud-yelling]

I do the same thing and track multiple tanks when the car is new (to me) or when I thing mileage is suffering. The computers on the Audi and M3 are pretty close to accurate. I calculate it manually on the Ranger because it’s the only way. My OBD scanner has an mpg monitor if you leave it hooked up, but it’s less accurate than the displays on the Audi/M3.

I do this but I also try and fill up at the same exact pump if I can. Some pumps trigger the cut off earlier then others. One time I got like 27mpg according to the math, but then the next time I got 14. Only thing that makes sense to me is the one fill up the pump triggered really early so it was more like a 3/4 tank. Can’t trust a gas gauge in an e30.
